CANON PERSONALITY:

Yu Narukami: The Sister Complex Kingpin of Steel

The first thing the audience needs to know about Yu Narukami is that while he may be a quiet person in the beginning, it doesn't make him bland or boring. In the anime, we see an actual personality shine through through the interactions he has with the other characters. In the beginning he’s detached from the world and quiet due to how he’s lived before the series began. With this in mind, his mindset in the beginning was not to bother making friends because he would leave soon and there would be no point to it. But then he arrives in Inaba and while he only stays for a year, he opens up to show how kind, courageous, helpful, caring, and even showing that he fears being alone. Yu isn’t just a one sided character, he turns out to be a three dimension character with the just the right amount of flaws, quirks, and traits that make people like him for him.

The first thing people tend to notice with Yu in the beginning is that he’s quiet and pretty formal. When meeting Dojima and Nanako, he's pretty quiet in their conversation. Actually, Dojima had to remind Yu who he is because the poor boy looked confused when they met. It’s because he’s used to being by himself and only keeping people at a distance. Because in his mind, what’s the point of being friends with someone when he knows he has to leave again? But it doesn’t make him bitter or hate life, just lonely. Even during the first two times he sees Yosuke, he looks at him and walks away ("I'll just leave him be."). Then again, how can you ask someone if they’re ok when they get hit in the balls? So yes in the beginning, he was pretty detached from the world. But the experiences he earns and the friendships he gains throughout the story make him grow and open up to the kind of person we see him today. Sure he’s still quiet at the end of his journey but it doesn’t mean that he’s detached. Actually, he keeps quiet about all the things that he does do and refuses to brag about it. This leads into the fact that he is pretty helpful to those around him.

When I talk about helpful, I mean Yu does anything and everything to make someone happy. It’s not to make him feel good, he just wants to make the other person feel a little better. When he takes a job at a daycare center, one of the kids breaks a toy. Instead of having one of the mothers pay for it, he takes responsibility and uses his own money to give to the angry lady. It depleted much of his paycheck (“Damn you Neo Featherman!”) but it’s something he wouldn’t regret. He joins the school’s basketball team because the captain, Kou Ichijo, asks him for help hoping that with him there it would motivate the team to do better. Even if it’s just listening or standing up to someone, it’s still helping the other person and it gets him a friend. Looking at how he interacts with his friends during the series, it shows that he has a good ear to listen to, doesn’t need to sugar coat how he feels and will even try terrible tasting food in order to make someone happy. Camping trip and Mystery Food X is all that needs to be said. It can also make him a little blunt at times such as blurting out that the hotel the group is staying in was formally a love hotel or the sudden thought of being alone with Kanji in a tent ("Not at night.").

With this, one can say that he is a busybody: he works two jobs (daycare and tutor), goes to school (and gets good grades mind you), fights in a different world, and still manages to help others outside of the murder mystery surrounding the town. Somehow it makes him appear to be kind of like a ‘jack-of-all-trades’ when it comes to it. Need a babysitter? He can do that. Need him to crossdress for you in a pageant? He’ll do it without blinking and eye (no seriously, he did this.). Want some good cooked food? Give him a call because the girls sure do suck at it!

Yu can be someone who enjoys having fun with friends or with family. Small things such as watching fireworks or eating watermelon with his friends are memories that he truly treasures. He can be playful and funny at times and they borderline on being goofy. For example, the King’s Game on Tatsumi Port Island shows this in spades. When picked next for the role of ‘the king’, instead of saying it’s his turn, Yu makes a big spectale which includes putting on his glasses, spinning around and his shirt flies open. The reason why he’s so over the top during this can stem back to feeling alone as I previously mentioned. It’s the first time we hear Yu having any friends so being a goofball around them means that he’s comfortable around them. Heck, even during the school festival Yu chooses to go sit on the girls’ side during the group date just for giggles (and naturally making poor Yosuke confused). He also enjoys spending time with Nanako and will try and make her smile. Early on, Yu performs a little magic trick with a rubber band for her just to break the ice. Just so she wouldn’t get lonely, he brings her to Junes to meet the rest of his friends and ends up having fun despite some awkward conversation.

Despite everything, Yu does have a fear: the idea of being alone scares the living hell out of him. We see in the anime that while he is stuck in Shadow Mitsuo’s illusion, he sees his friends all drifting away from him after the case is solved. Everyone gets busier with their day to day lives and even Rise seems to have moved away at this point, making Yu start to feel as he was in the beginning. He starts to freak out when the shadow confronts him but more so that he can’t summon a persona. Having a persona meant having a bond with someone and in this, there were none. Basically no persona meant no bond. No bond meant no friendships and that god awful feeling of loneliness.

"I am far…from empty!"

But what drives this home most of all is during the final battle with Izanami and his own fight with Margaret. Yu is put through a time loop in which he relives the last day of his stay in Inaba over and over again. During part of it, he realizes this and chooses to stay in it so he doesn’t have to leave his friends and his family. During the fight with Margaret, his own shadow appears and says the following:

"I was afraid of a future without my friends, afraid of leaving everyone behind and moving forward on my own...I don't want to be alone again, I've been alone, and I won't go back!"

Unlike everyone else, he admits that this is his true feelings and acknowledges the shadow from the very start.

While Yu can be pretty cheerful and go along with everyone, he also has a side of him that can be only described as ‘ice-cold rational’. We see this during the confrontation in Namatame’s hospital room in which the team argues weither to throw him into the TV or not after Nanako’s death. Yu is deathly quiet during this point, almost like it’s scary to see him act in such a manner. In the anime version, he almost tosses him into the TV but the thought of Nanako makes him think twice about his choice. When he does, Yu then tries to convince the rest of the team to find the true culprit. When it comes to the murder cases or rescue missions, he doesn’t mess around or find time to joke around. The only exception is when they had to rescue Kanji and he felt a little uncomfortable about the area; however, he pushed through it and showed that even when he’s out of his comfort zone, Yu can get the job done.

If there’s one thing the audience knows about the boy, it’s that he’s determined. How determined is he? Like a fucking rock. Nothing stops this boy from accomplishing his goals weither it’s solving a murder case, getting an umbrella for his little cousin, or fish for the biggest one in the river to get a comb. Once he sets his mind on something, there is no chance that he will change his mind. He sees things through to the end even if it’s bad for him. Take Izanami’s sudden ‘groundhog day’ experience that he went through: he certainly relieved the day over and over again but once he knew that something was up, he didn’t stop trying to find the answer. And while he has hit a few road blocks, he snaps out of them and pulls through. He refused to give up when it came to the murder case and saw it through to the end. He wanted to reach that truth because it’s that important to him. He did it to keep his new friends and family safe as well as make his ‘home’ be at peace.

In summary, Yu Narukami is a young man who cares for his friends and family, can be courageous in the face of danger but also has the fear of being alone and losing everything dear he cared about. When it comes to matters of the murders and the true culprit, Yu is all business to the point when it’s dangerous. Basically, don’t fuck with him if you piss him off.

Yua Narukami: The Girl Who Once was Lost

Yua is not that different from her male counterpart: both are kind, considerate, and can be a bit of a troll. The big difference between them is that Yua can be a bit more blunt and does call out the guys when they are being total morons. For example, the joke involving Teddie and scoring, while no one explained what it meant to him and just let him assume, Yua is the one who tells him about what it means and gives him that ‘Talk’. Needless to say, Teddie does listen and keeps those thoughts and conversations away from Yua and the other girls after that. She is also the one who signed up the boys in the crossdressing pageant due to Yosuke signing up the girls, including Yua.

Another example of her bluntness is when meeting Kanji and going through his dungeon to meet his shadow: while Yu and Yosuke were clearly afraid of ‘the gayz’ in said dungeon, Yua was more focused on getting the boy out. Sure it was awkward but that’s a part of Kanji and she wasn’t going to judge. It shows later during the camping trip when Kanji ended up busting in on her, Chie, and Yukiko. Chie did end up kicking him in the face but Yua took care of any injuries and let him explain himself, which ties into the caring and understanding trait. He ended up sleeping with the girls (next to Yua who didn’t mind).

Yua can also be resourceful when she wants to. She could use any item around and smack a shadow just to keep it away from the humans (and bear) and when she confronted Adachi, she used a piece of broken glass to slice his hand open (and cut her hair in the process because he was holding onto it). She’s also resourceful outside of battle being able to keep up with school activities, after school jobs, family matters, and helping friends.

POINT OF DEPARTURE:

In this world where Persona 4 takes place, the protagonist is a young woman named Yua Narukami, a version of Yu Narukami where he was always a she. Think of it like P3P’s gameplay where the player can choose between a male or female avatar to play as; each follow the same storyline of trying to catch a serial murderer while traveling to a world beyond the television to solve the mystery as well as trying to balance a social life, family, and school all at once. It’s a serious pain in the ass but it’s no problem for a protagonist. However, there are a few differences between Yu’s story and Yua’s.

-Yua’s choice of sports is different from her male counterpart: she could choose either swimming or track team. She chose track and the member she ends up associating with on the team happens to be Yumi (girl from Drama Club in Yu’s world). The social link is still Sun but the setting has changed. The Strength arcana is still Kou who happens to be in the drama club.

-Another difference is that while Yu has the chance to date one (or all) girl of his choice, Yua went the friend zone route. She liked the guys like any normal teenage girl does but choosing one to care for more than anyone else seemed wrong to her. So she chose not to date at all, preferring her friendships over romance. Besides, she already ships Kanji and Naoto together and Yosuke…well, he did show interest in her like an obvious idiot but Saki’s murder hit him hard and he’s still trying to get over everything. Yosuke does admit to her that he really likes her close to the climax of the story but Yua had to turn him down because she wasn’t interested in it. She thought it was better to tell the truth to her partner than string him along and lose that trust. It was a hard pill to swallow for the Magician but at least he still had a good friend.

-Unlike the term ‘onii-chan’ (Big Bro) used by Nanako for Yu, she saw Yua more as a mother figure since her own passed away. Yua is there to cook, clean, play, and help Nanako with her homework just like her male counterpart but because of her gender, Nanako would associate Yua as someone like a mother to her. But Chie still got her to say ‘Onee-chan’ rather than Mom. Speaking of family, Dojima is a bit more protective of Yua once she started getting those weird letters and hanging around places where she shouldn’t be. So he ended up getting Adachi to keep an eye on her. Which is pretty funny due to how many times she noticed him and snuck off without him noticing. The more Dojima gets to know and understand Yua (and the same with her), he started to see her as another daughter.

- Yosuke’s partnership with Yua has changed as well: he still had some of that jealousy about her and how she seemed to fit in right off the mark and get along with everyone and it hurt a bit more about having to be led by a girl. However, Yosuke did see why Yua was a better leader with the way she held herself during a fight, used resources at her disposal, and was there to listen to anyone who needed it. He then started getting romantic feelings about her and while it was one-sided, he was glad that she didn’t cut him out of her life. Instead, their relationship became like siblings with Yua being a younger sister type. Trust her, only ‘little’ thing about her is the height.

-Another change is how Yua and Adachi interact but after the fact that he revealed as the killer. He still kept up his doofus act in front of her and acted like a total idiot until the truth came out. That’s when Adachi is more demeaning and misogynic with his comments such as how Yua isn’t supposed to be a leader because of her gender or that she should be “making a bento for her boyfriend”. Kill women, get his ass handed to him by one.

(Edited on 12/1/14) Yua was in Syn from July until around the end of October, being a Veteran of 6 to 7 Jaunts prior to her 'returning' from a dungeon. Nothing much has changed for her except being a little more trusting of a version of Adachi who happened to have her role in his world. Not by much considering she kicked him out of a hotel bed while in Austin but who wouldn't? Her leader skills were also tested when she became an infiltrator during a jaunt and became the leader of the mermaid rebels; while she didn't show it after the jaunt, she was pretty torn up on it after the kraken was killed as well as the captain of the Panlong (he deserved it) and one of 'her own' became a Stricken and tried to tell him that she wouldn't let him die.

ABILITIES:

Persona

"A persona, in the word's everyday usage, is a social role or a character played by an actor. The same individuals as actors could play different roles."

~Wikipedia

To put it simply, a persona is a mask that someone can wear. A persona is a part of a person (considered as part of their soul), that can be called to fight. Personae usually take the form of gods and heroes of a certain pantheon with a few exceptions such as Lucifer and Beelzebub. In P4's case, it's Shinto based mostly. When it comes to Persona 4, it is gained by 'facing yourself'. Basically get in a boss fight with your shadow self, accept it, and gain this power. Most of the party gains their personas this way except for Yua; she gains hers through a handshake on her first day in Inaba.

Personae themselves are vastly different because it depends on the person using them. For example, Yukiko Amagi's persona focuses on fire magic and healing spells. Yua on the other hand is special because of her Wild Card ability (explained below) and can switch from being a physical powerhouse to a buffer to a healer. It's all based on how the person is and with Yua, she's not only a Jack-Of-All-Trades outside of battle, but she's the same during a fight.

Wild Card

Yua is a rare case when it comes to summoning personae: unlike most who can summon one, she can summon MANY and from different arcana. However, in order to gain these personae, Yua must form something called a ‘Social Link’ with someone. Basically, get to know people and understand them. It’s something that doesn’t happen overnight; Yua must work hard and truly understand the person before a link can be established. ("Bonds between people are the true power.") For game purposes, Yua will only have access to the personae that she makes a Social Link with: as an example, if she makes a Magician link with someone who fits the traits of it, she’ll be able to summon Pyro Jack as well as her original persona Izanagi. The Master List of summonable personae are here. (It’s my Yu account so it’s still me)

Since she was in game before, I have made a list of what she had gained power wise before poofing.

INVENTORY; A duffel with a week’s worth of clothes, her Midnight Channel glasses, the orb Myriad Truths (is used to show Izanami’s true form), a katana hidden in said duffel.

ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? Coming back and this is an edited version of my original app.

S A M P L E S;

FIRST PERSON:

Telepathic Network

[It’s quiet. That’s the first thing she can notice.]

How long have I been gone from these Jaunts?

[Shaking her head, a sigh can be heard. Of course no one can see it due to how the message is being sent.]

Sorry, didn’t mean to be rude. To all the newcomers here, I’m Yua Narukami and this isn’t my first time traveling between worlds. It can be scary the first time around and even worse when you’re the only one from home, almost like you’re alone. But I’m here to say that you’re not; I learned that while some people can be rough around the edges, they would do their best to protect everyone. So if you need anything answered or someone to talk to, even if it’s something small…I’ll be there for you.

Oh, one more thing: if Remy-san or Joscelin-san are still around, could you tell me what’s happened? My mind’s a bit fuzzy from being left out there too long.

THIRD PERSON:

Dreamscape

The first thing Yua noticed was how she felt like she was floating. Her eyes weren’t open for the moment but she could feel her body being light as a feather, as if she could be swept away if a gust a wind decided to pass by. Was she flying? Or was it just a dream? It felt too nice to be reality; either that or Yua wouldn’t believe it until she could see it with her own two eyes. Slowly but surely, her eyes opened up and…

Stared at the light fixture on the ceiling.

Strange, it looked familiar but it wasn’t coming to her mind at the moment. Perhaps it was because everything was rather blurry. Once her vision regained its focus, Yua’s eyes widened to see the surroundings of her own room back in Inaba. Everything was in place like she had never left: the robot figures, the papers scattered all over her desk, and a few origami cranes resting on the couch. But wasn’t she on the train to go back to Tokyo before being pulled into the Jaunts? She took one look beside her and noticed her katana lying on her right, quickly grabbing it and heading out the door.

"Something’s not right."

Yua knew she left Inaba, her home, before the jumping started and to be thrown back in had gotten her worried. She fished out her cellphone from her pocket and looked at the signal bars. “No service. Figured as much.” She whispered before putting it back and walking down the hallway. The teen checked the rooms of her uncle and little cousin, only to see them crisp and clean but without the occupants in there. It felt eerie, like being back in the TV World but with no backup this time and everything to lose. Yua hoped that nothing would pop out at her like a ghost of Adachi trying to get his revenge. Only this time she had a proper weapon instead of a large piece of glass to try and shove through a hand. As she reached the top of the stairs, she put a couple fingers to the side of her head as if she was focusing on something. Instead, Yua was trying to send a message out to her fellow Travelers.

'Can anyone hear me?'
